Chapter Committees

If you are looking for ways to network and become a more active Central Iowa SHRM member there are a lot of opportunities available. You could become a member of one of the many committees, or simply volunteer for various one time commitments that come up throughout the year. Certification Committee

Vice President: Denis LeRoy, SPHR

The certification committee is responsible for planning and facilitating study groups twice each year to assist individuals who are preparing for the HR certification exams.  The study groups start annually in January and again in September.  Individuals who complete the study group and pass the certification exam may be asked to assist with the facilitation of future study groups.

Competency Development Committee

Vice President: Becky Etnier

The mission of the Competency Development Committee is to create necessary and purposeful skills, through quarterly workshops, that an HR professional can immediately take back and apply to their organization. SHRM's competency model will serve as the foundation to these workshops. This committee is responsible for creating topics, themes, speakers, event locations, etc.

We are always looking for new members to contribute to our end goal! Please contact Becky Etnier at if you are interested in joining this committee. We will meet each month around the lunch hour.


Finance Committee

Vice President: Tonja Clark

The Finance Committee serves in an advisory role to the Central Iowa SHRM Board of Directors. We are continuing to focus on (1) full compliance with national SHRM's Chapter Finance guide, and (2) consideration of how this Finance Committee might better support the ongoing conduct of finances for our chapter (reporting, oversight, review, planning).

Foundation & Strategic Partnership Committee

Vice President: Danni Morton, SHRM-CP, PHR

In the past few years we have seen a trend in the interest of YOU, our members, to be strongly involved in the community through your membership at Central Iowa SHRM. This has reiterated for us as a Board, the importance community partnerships bring to our members and our chapter. HR professionals are giving people. We felt 2013 was the time to form a role dedicated to this area of our chapter, partnering with the great work of the SHRM Foundation. Through the alliances we build, we will connect you to volunteer opportunities, specifically those that put to use the skill sets you possess as HR professionals.

Legislative Action Committee

Vice President: Josh Opperman, JD, SHRM-CP

The purpose of our committee is to plan and implement the annual State Legal & Legislative Conference, monitor and evaluate ongoing legislative, regulatory, and legal action at the federal, state, and local level that may impact the management of human resources, plan and implement the semi-annual Clair W. Fisher HR-Related Law Series, provide legislative updates at Central Iowa SHRM chapter meetings, create and maintain Central Iowa SHRM chapter website legislative content and resources, and promote legislative knowledge to drive increased legislative involvement and influence of chapter members.

The Legal and Legislative Committee has a working lunch on the second Thursday of the month. We currently meet in the East Executive Dining Room of GuideOne Insurance at 1111 Ashworth Rd in West Des Moines, from 12:00 - 1:00p.m. Lunch is provided (Thank you GuideOne)!

Membership Committee

Vice President: Danni Morton, SHRM-CP, PHR

The Central Iowa SHRM Membership Committee’s mission is to grow the chapter membership while working to retain its current member base.  The committee reaches out to prospective and current members in multiple ways, promoting the benefits of professional membership offered by Central Iowa SHRM that includes a variety of events, programs, and educational resources, along with multiple opportunities for networking, volunteering, leadership and HR development. The Central Iowa SHRM Membership committee spreads the message that belonging to Central Iowa SHRM not only benefits the individual member but also their respective organizations as well as the community at large. 

The Membership Committee meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at Farm Bureau Financial in West Des Moines, IA  from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Program & Competency Development Committee

Vice President: Debbie Ladehoff

The Central Iowa SHRM Program Committee is responsible for securing speakers for the monthly Chapter meetings, as well as coordinating other optional program events. We strive to arrange programs that address a wide variety of topics relevant to the HR profession, which also provide HRCI and SHRM recertification credit for attendees.

Workforce Readiness Committee

Vice President: Melissa Heikes

The Workforce Readiness Committee’s mission is to provide career development resources to students in high school throughout Central Iowa by speaking to classes, participating in mock interviews and assisting with resume building and critiques. We also present a Career Expo to job seekers of all levels and backgrounds in the Des Moines area annually.  

The Workforce Readiness Committee meets on the third Thursday of the month from 8-9 a.m. at Panera Bread on Westown Parkway. For more information on the Workforce Readiness Committee, please click here


Emerging Professionals & College Outreach Committee

Vice President: Megan Wonsmos

Our vision to be recognized as the voice for growth opportunities within the HR community. We will support our vision by offering programs that focus on cultivating relationships, promote knowledge sharing and access to resources, and career development opportunities tailored toward those who are new to the field and/or less experienced HR professionals aspiring to elevate their career.
