Chapter Committees

If you are looking for ways to network and become a more active Central Iowa SHRM member, there are a lot of opportunities available! You could become a member of one of the many committees, or simply volunteer for various one time commitments that come up throughout the year. If you would like to find out more information about the opportunities that exist, please email info@ci-shrm.org.

Certification Committee

The Certification Committee is responsible for planning and facilitating study groups twice each year to assist individuals who are preparing for the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certification exams. The study groups start annually in the spring and again in the fall and correspond with the SHRM test dates.

Finance Committee

Vice President: Jennifer Braafhart, PHR, SHRM-CP

The Finance Committee serves in an advisory role to the Central Iowa SHRM Board of Directors. We are continuing to focus on (1) full compliance with national SHRM's Chapter Finance guide, and (2) consideration of how this Finance Committee might better support the ongoing conduct of finances for our chapter (reporting, oversight, review, planning).

Legislative Action Committee

Vice President: Stephen Smith

The purpose of our committee is to plan and implement the annual State Legal & Legislative Conference, monitor and evaluate ongoing legislative, regulatory, and legal action at the federal, state, and local level that may impact the management of human resources, plan and implement the semi-annual Clair W. Fisher HR-Related Law Series, provide legislative updates at Central Iowa SHRM chapter meetings, create and maintain Central Iowa SHRM chapter website legislative content and resources, and promote legislative knowledge to drive increased legislative involvement and influence of chapter members.

Membership Committee

Vice President: Roxy Livermore, SHRM-SCP

The Central Iowa SHRM Membership Committee’s mission is to grow the chapter membership while working to retain its current member base. The committee reaches out to prospective and current members in multiple ways, promoting the benefits of professional membership offered by Central Iowa SHRM that includes a variety of events, programs, and educational resources, along with multiple opportunities for networking, volunteering, leadership and HR development. The Central Iowa SHRM Membership Committee spreads the message that belonging to Central Iowa SHRM not only benefits the individual member, but also their respective organizations, as well as the community at large.

Program & Competency Development Committee

Vice President: Katie Fischer

The Central Iowa SHRM Program Committee is responsible for securing speakers for the monthly Chapter meetings, as well as coordinating other optional program events. We strive to arrange programs that address a wide variety of topics relevant to the HR profession, which provide SHRM recertification credit for attendees.

Workforce Readiness Committee

Vice President: Melissa Heikes

Based upon employment market trends, this committee will foster partnerships with community organizations to help connect and engage Iowa’s future workforce with colleges, apprenticeships, vocational skill training offerings and employers as they prepare to enter the workforce.

The Workforce Readiness Committee has spent the last year building relationships with local organizations that work with high-school and middle-school age students to keep students informed of workforce and after-high school opportunities. This committee also assists these organizations and the populations they serve through mock interviews, resume critiques and classroom presentations.

Emerging Professionals & College Outreach Committee

Vice President: Megan Wonsmos

Our vision to be recognized as the voice for growth opportunities within the HR community. We will support our vision by offering programs that focus on cultivating relationships, promote knowledge sharing and access to resources, and career development opportunities tailored toward those who are new to the field and/or less experienced HR professionals aspiring to elevate their career.
